Step into the Lives of Odense’s Poor Women
The houses, gifted by Pernille Lykke to the city’s poor women, were inhabited until 1955.
Today, Pernille Lykke’s Poorhouses are arranged as an exhibition. Behind the first two doors, installations tell the story of the poor houses and poverty in the city, past and present. Open drawers, look through holes, and listen to fully immerse yourself in the experience.
Behind the last two doors, you get a glimpse of how poor women lived in the past. One door shows furniture and personal items from window Ane Katrine Hansen’s apartment, as it looked around 1935. The other door gives insight into how two women may have lived when Pernille Lykke established the houses in 1617.
The exhibition is housed in a 17th-century half-timbered building. Please note there are two steps to enter.
